What’s going on? Men are out walking by themselves or even in groups. They have gotten on the walking to stay fit bandwagon, albeit a little self consciously. Some guys seem a little apologetic about being out there in their shorts and walking shoes and if their buddies happen to drive by, they will break into a little jog. Walking is for sissies, or so some men think. There are those who have obviously been dragged kicking and screaming and are walking with their wives. Needless to say, all this activity has prompted shoe manufacturers to come out with a line of mens walking shoes. Now I’m sure there are men who enjoy an evening stroll, but they’ll probably never admit it.

Every major athletic shoe manufacturer has a line of shoes just for walking. Won’t any old sneaker do? Well, not really. Shoes that you run in are quite different from walking shoes. Walking shoes should be lighter and more flexible to accommodate the motion of your feet. When you’re walking your feet hit the ground heel first and are in contact with the ground longer than when you are running. Of course walking is lower impact, but you need padding in different areas. Trust me guys, if you work in a profession where you spend the day on your feet, you will grow to appreciate a good walking shoe. Walking all over a giant home improvement store all day will wear you out.

When you shop for walking shoes, wear the socks you plan to wear when walking to ensure a good fit. Put on both shoes and walk around the store. If they are not comfortable right out of the box, pick another brand or style. You should not have to break them in. Walking shoes don’t have to ugly or clunky. They have some that are quite stylish if you’re fashion forward kind of guy. They come in black and brown in addition to the traditional white.

Some companies even have suede mens walking shoes that look nice enough to wear for other occasions. Most people who work in hospitals and health care facilities are required to wear non slip shoes and they need to be black or brown. The same is true for many restaurant workers. Rockport, Hush Puppies, New Balance, Adidas, and Reebok are just a few companies that make walking shoes for men. Pick your favorite brand and get out there and walk.
